Direct current (DC) electric power transfer is made possible by devices such as rectifiers, inverters, and other types of power supplies. In the 1960s, researchers and engineers at the General Electric research laboratories in West Point, Pennsylvania began to think of power electronics-based solutions for improving the performance of electrical machines. This power electronics revolution (beginning around 1980) took electric motors from horsepower to megawatt levels. This "endless improvement" in efficiency was achieved by quantifying and improving the mechanical systems of the machines and, then, by augmenting them with control systems that exploit the new technologies. This new field of electronics grew and followed in parallel with the Internet-based "digital trend" that has been prevalent since the 1980s.
When the number of grids grows, it is often useful to merge them. Power connexions are made by connecting the power grid between power stations or between power station and power consumers via AC/DC converters.
Power electronic devices are configured using solid-state semiconductor technologies. The vast majority of power electronic devices are fabricated on silicon wafers using integrated circuit manufacturing technology. The power devices that are commonly used are insulated gate field-effect transistors (IGFETs) and bipolar junction transistors (BJTs).
The power distribution system (PDS) provides the connections and controls electrical distribution systems. Power electronic devices are rated by their maximum continuous current carrying capacity and referred to as power devices or power electronic devices. For example, a power MOSFET is rated at 1,000 amps for a short circuit and 25 000 amps for a normal load. Other major components used are grid resistors and capacitors. As the supply voltage increases the current in the load increases. This is applicable to the power distribution system. Power electronic devices are the core of power electronics. With the advent of transistor radios on cell phones and other hand-held devices, a small amount of power electronics technology are used in the power supply circuitry and the built-in control circuits. This is why, in over the past six decades, the power electronics industry has grown substantially. d2c66b5586
