The only way to have a match is to connect via the Lobby Browser, which requires you to be logged in with Steam. Once you have started a match, it will use the players IP addresses to determine how they are connected. If all players are on the same router, it will act as a LAN game, and not send data over the internet.
Wah waaaaaaaah . The sad trombone is here to announce that the official Age of Empires II FAQ has revealed that the Steam re-release of the RTS classic won't have LAN play. The single player will be playable in Steam's offline mode, but you'll have to have an internet connection to play multiplayer. It's not all gloomy tidings, though. Read on for a break-down of what we know about the game so far.
Yesterday I was going to suggest Windscribe or VPNSTEIN V2 then i discarded the reply as i believed you would not be interested. Anyways in my opinion since the vpn fixed it only means that the router or one of your computers are not really opening any ports. OpenVpn windscribe or vpnstein those will open ports. A lot of players use vpn on voobly to fix fast proxy.
Once we disabled the firewalls we were able to connect to common LAN server lobby and launch the game. We played this game for several hours and it has not missed a beat. I saved the game to my PC as well. The following day we tried again with firewalls off again and could not make a connection. When I tried to load the previously saved game, it would not allow the second player to join.
I need an advice from you. I am going to make LAN-party with my friends. We were always playing old AOE2 together, but this new remake is problematic. I cannot entre multiplayer section, which contains LAN game, withou connection to Steam. Is there some way how to create and join LAN game without internet?
Lack of direct LAN (local area network) play is one of the reasons why many of the fans of the classic Age of Empires 2 are quick to dismiss the HD remakeXResearch source of the game. A LAN game is a game played by players whose computers are connected together by a local network, allowing them to avoid having to use the often slow online multiplayer servers.
AoE2HD does not have true LAN support that would be recognized by the worlds gaming communities. To play this with anyone, you have to be online and logged into Steam. Steam can allegedly (once you have connected through their servers) allow users PC's to move network traffic relating to AoE2HD back to your local network (if you are playing with someone on the same LAN) but this doesn't seem to work for everyone and if you loose connection to the internet, the game will disconnect.

Age of Empires II HD: The ForgottenExpansionBase game Age of Empires II: HD EditionIconGeneral informationDevelopersSkyBox LabsForgotten EmpiresPublishersMicrosoft Game StudiosGenreReal-time strategyPlatformWindowsRelease dateWindowsNovember 7, 2013Age of Empires II HD: The Forgotten (informally abbreviated to AoF) is the second official expansion pack for Age of Empires II. It features five new civilizations, (the Incas, Indians, Italians, Magyars, and Slavs), new units and technologies, new maps, enhanced AI, a higher population limit, greater on-screen rendering, bug fixes and several tweaks to old units, technologies, and bonuses for improved gameplay balance. It was released along with patch 3.0.
However, the new AI and campaigns content were considered "bad", with the AI being called "dumbed down" and not as good as the Conquerors' AI. The campaigns were attacked for leaving the build and destroy style, for a "Fixed Force" or "Regicide with a Hero" (used in many fanmade scenarios) along with units being stuck in eyecandy, being too hard, and "not allowing you to play/unskippable cutscenes".
In Age of Empires II: HD Edition, fans of the original game and new players alike will fall in love with the classic Age of Empires II experience. Explore all the original single player campaigns from both Age of Kings and The Conquerors expansion, choose from 18 civilizations spanning over a thousand years of history, and head online to challenge other Steam players in your quest for world domination throughout the ages. Originally developed by Ensemble Studios and re-imagined in high definition by Hidden Path Entertainment, Skybox Labs, and Forgotten Empires, Microsoft Studios is proud to bring Age of Empires II: HD Edition to Steam!
I've been recently trying to play Age of Empires 2 on my Linux Ubuntu 12.04 LTS computer. However, I can't seem to get it to work with any method i found on the computer. I've tried Playonlinux, however, when i try to play it, a message comes up saying that there has been an internal error. I've also tried doing it though virtualbox and installing it onto a virtual version of windows xp. However, after it completes the install, it tell me that there is no CD in the disk drive and that I should insert it and restart the application. If anyone has a way I haven't tried yet or something that I could have missed please let me know. Thanks.
On some older Dell laptop models (e.g. the M1530) an issue occurs where the OS crashes and a blue-screen of death is displayed. This issue occurs after a seemingly random amount of gameplay time (from

GAME.TYPE ........: Strategy Note: ~~~~~ Some users of our release approached us with what they believed to be a crack issue. The game would crash on certain setups during the first Age of Kings campaign, upon finding the second relic. This is in fact a game bug that can be reproduced on the original version of the game as well. Because we like this game, we've patched the problem away and present you with this game-related fix. The publisher is allowed to use this fix in their next update provided they remove DRM ;)

Thankfully, it couldn't be easier to use Age of Empires 2 cheats. While playing, simply hit Enter to show a text box, then type in the cheat code and press Enter again to activate it. The Age of Empires 2 cheat codes are not case sensitive, so as long as you use the correct spelling and spacing as shown in the list below then they will always work. Remember that if you're playing Age of Empires 2: HD Edition, using these cheats will disable most of the achievements in-game, so bear that in mind if awards are important to you.
Team up with three other players to battle A.I. opponents in some traditional RTS "comp stomp". Although there is technically a LAN-option it still requires the host to have an online connection. Specific campaign missions and historical battles for two players are also available.
