1096. Second Crusade. This crusade was begun in response to the capture of Jerusalem by the Muslims in 1099. The Emperor Henry IV had died and his son, Conrad III, was forced to lead the invasion. Conrad III was a weak emperor who had to rely on the strong support of the Pope. They aimed to recapture all of the lost territories and this included the Holy City.

Philip II Augustus, who reigned from 1180 to 1223, was determined to keep his word and, after being wounded in the fighting at Acre, he was finally victorious at the Battle of Hattin in 1187. In 1198 Philip II Augustus led a crusade against Syria. He had the support of Pope Innocent III, who issued an encyclical in which he demanded that Christians must return to the lands of their ancestors. Anziers, Damascus and Jerusalem were then sacked. The Muslims were defeated and their leader, Saladin, was captured. After the city had been conquered Philip II Augustus made a pilgrimage to the Holy City, which was cleared of all non-Muslims and converted to a mosque. He made a vow to rebuild the Temple of Solomon and he was said to have been the first western monarch to enter Jerusalem. In 1199 another crusade was planned, this time without success. The emperor, Henry VI, died in 1206, leaving his kingdom in chaos. Most crusades were abandoned and the only exception was the Fourth Crusade, led by the French and Venetians, which decided to cross the Adriatic instead. All of these crusades touched on the heart of what made the West so powerful; the ambition to return the holy city to Christian control. For the most part they were weakly led and the crusades only made history because of what followed. Unfortunately the crusades sowed the seeds of their own downfall and, coupled with the First Crusades, they played a large part in the rise of the military orders.
