For upgrading a server, you need to take some precautions regarding backups first. As it is not possible to upgrade a server without losing data, you either need to have a backup for your data or remove as much data from the server as you can before upgrading. For this purpose you need to create a system image of your server. By preparing a system image , you can take a snapshot of your physical server's disk. After that just use a bootable media (such as a DVD or USB stick) for the upgrade. You can use Windows Image Mastering Technology or a third party product for preparing the system image. To upgrade a server, you should first make a plan on what needs to be changed and where you need to make the changes. This can be done in a couple of different ways. If you have a knowledge of the Windows Server operating system, you can use the Upgrading Windows Server documentation to determine the affected services and how UPGRADE_START method interact with firmware images, the local system and the content published by the operating system. In addition, you need to identify and track any customizations that you have made to the http protocol that is deployed to the operating system such as custom firewall rules, access to web services, ports for custom applications and server roles, and the version of the operating system that is deployed on the server.
Performing a hardware inventory of your servers is also advised because it can help identify the software that is installed on the server and helps you determine precisely what changes you will need to make to the server if an upgrade is successful. d2c66b5586
