I used the 6050 in conjunction with my favourite compressor, the Neumann VMX 251. Without doubt the 6050 makes this compressor sound more three dimensional and aggressive. It really makes it move and sounds more like a real compressor. The 6050 is also more natural sounding than the 5040 and its tendency to clip is less. Without doubt the 6050 also provides a much more musical character than the 5040. The compressor is surprisingly easy to use and the preset options are good and plentiful. It is a definite step up from the 5040 and really a lot easier to control and more intuitive than the 5040. It works perfectly with the Neumann and the 6050 really makes these two sound much more like a unit. Another nice touch is that this plug-in is capable of handling very high input levels
The new 6050 is also very easy to get your hands on. I managed to track one down for a mere £8.99 from http://guitarconnections.com/compressors and was worth the extra money. The overdrive version goes for a very reasonable £16.99. I think you get a lot of versatility and quality for your money.
As I mentioned, I don't know much about the 6050 at all, so I can't say much about its sound or lack of it. All I can say is that the hardware is very good indeed and it doesn't sound cheap, so I wouldn't be surprised if its units sell for over £700. If you already have the 6030, then I would guess it will be a no-brainer to upgrade to the 6050. If you have plenty of money to spend and an incredibly great set of hardware already, I'd think you'd be much better off with the 6050 as a second, third or fourth plug-in. It's the sort of plug-in that you can listen to and experiment with in a DAW, and then use to do some real work with. If you like the sound of the new modules, especially the D100, then you could easily end up with a really amazing distortion/overdrive. If you are starting from scratch, you will be better off with the 6030 Ultimate Compressor and the 6020 Ultimate EQ. However, if you don't already own those units, but you do have a good set of hardware, then the 6050 may be perfect for you.
The 6050 is clearly aimed at the same target market as the 6030: The serious and experienced professionals who already own the 6030 and are looking for new ways to do the things they already do, but who may be seeking some extra flexibility. The S671 is the only module with a built-in distortion option: The rest of the 6050 offer only second and third order harmonic processors.
Some applications, such as Java, require that the application directories and libraries are updated to a newer version before the user can update. However, there are some applications that are not explicitly API-specific, such as the X Window System, the X server source code, are automatically updated as required.
