Following a research project on the history of medieval Latin, I have for a few years now been collecting many papal decretals. I do not have, as some readers might guess, a particular interest in the decretals, but the chance to study decretals come from time to time is good, because they allow to see how the pontificate of a specific pope developed the pontifical tradition and generated texts which were not created by his episcopal successors. The most recent addition to my collection is the Decretals of Pope Gregory IX, published in Dresden in 1980 by Otto von Heimburg. Series X of the Royal manuscript, the British Library, Edinburgh has no systematic studies on papal decretals, so that I could not use the Royal 10 E IV as a tool for research. I had to approach the project afresh.

The BL often makes available photocopies of medieval manuscripts, but I wanted to have the original document. The digitization of manuscripts for the BL is a major research project, and the BL has a manager of digital projects who discusses and negotiates all relevant issues with the participants, for instance copyright issues. As a result of my inquiry, I could obtain a digitized photocopy of the Royal 10 E IV. I had all rights to use the document and could even try out the new interactive search tool on the BL main website.
