The soundtrack received widespread critical acclaim; it received 10 nominations at the 2007 Filmfare Awards, and won for Best Film score. and has been listed in the all-time best Hindi film soundtracks. Rolling Stone Magazine placed it at number 90 on its list of the "100 Greatest Albums of All Time". The film received nine nominations and won two awards—Best Actress for Padukone and Best Supporting Actress for Pathak—at the International Indian Film Academy Awards. At the 2007 Screen Awards, the album received six nominations, winning for Best Music Direction. It became the second winner for a female artist after Snigdha Poonawalla's Dus Tola. In a 2016 American magazine interview, Apne Aapne (About Us), Kumar was asked if he considered his own score among the greatest music he ever made, and answered, "Yes, absolutely. My goal was to create a mood in Ram-Leela through every single song. Starting with a song like Ye Rishtey Kaun, which I completely had to create as a waterfall. If someone told me that the soundtrack would be similar to a musical, I would have thought they were mad."
More than eight months had passed since the films release, and Kumar was unhappy with the music's sound. According to him, the producers and Bhansali and Korshak wanted a romantic film soundtrack, while he wanted to change the film's sentiment by including new ideas with folk music and a new sound. Besides this, he recited his lyrics while recording and wanted the gloomy track, 'Kabhi Yaar', to remain as severe as the song is. During the recording of this song he started crying and the recording was stopped, but Bhansali told him that this would be needed. Due to a conflict with the distributors, the song was not released.
